Lessons

One to One Lessons

Lessons take place at my home or online; week day and evening sessions are available. It may be possible to arrange with your child's school for tutoring to take place during the school day at my home or at your child's school (please contact me for further information). I am fully insured and my DBS certificate is available to view on request.

I have been trained by the British Dyslexia Association and am level 7 qualified to use a specialist teaching programme which uses a different approach to support learning than schools/colleges. Its structured and cumulative approach is designed for learners with a SpLD, but it would benefit any learner who is not yet achieving their full potential.

Through an assessment at the beginning of the programme, specific and personalised targets are identified, which form the basis of lesson plans.  Lessons are multisensory and fun, and teach the skills underpinning reading, spelling, writing and maths through interactive activities and games. Each individual will learn in a different way and lessons will be planned to meet the needs of each student, allowing them to learn in the way which best suits their learning style.

Low self - confidence, low self-esteem and anxiety are also additional challenges experienced by many individuals with dyslexia.  Through experiencing success in lessons, self-confidence is nurtured and developed, and feeds into other areas.

Group Lessons

Group lessons can also be arranged. Please contact me for more details.

What does a typical lesson look like?

A typical lesson will be an hour in length and consist of a series of short, focussed activities where learning is led by the student. Activities are multi-sensory in nature, and metacognitive awareness is developed so that learners are able to recognise how they can transfer newly developed skills to work independently. This in turn, helps to support the development of self-esteem.

Lessons will focus on developing fluency with the alphabet, revision of previous learning and an introduction of new learning for reading and spelling,  through a discovery approach.  New learning will then be reinforced through games and activities. Skills such as phonological awareness, study skills, handwriting or touch typing will also be taught, dependent on individual need.
